July 8: Top Ten Blogging Confessions
I’m going to use Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner‘s previous list here as a guide…below, my top 10 book blogging confessions:
- I am not a good book-lender. I will recommend the hell out a book and then refuse to lend it out, which is mean. I just get terrified that it will get damaged or lost, even when logically I know it won’t!
- On a similar theme, I take book spine damage and page dog-earing/folding VERY seriously. I have to work really hard not to flinch when people turn the page corners over on the train.
- I am very judgemental about book covers – I won’t buy something if I don’t like the cover.
- I have never read any stereotypical ‘chick lit’ or traditional romance novels because…I kind of think they’re lame (sorry!)
- If I buy a set of books, I like them to match. My Little Women series is all my Grandma’s 1940s copies except for Jo’s Boys and I HATE that it doesn’t match the others.
- I have a serious book-buying problem. I can’t stop buying new books, even when I have loads of unread ones. There’s just so many great books put there waiting for me to read them!
- I am trying to buy books only from actual book-stores. It’s hard when Amazon is so convenient, but I like going into a real bookshop, especially independent ones.
- I have over 100 unread books in my house. I know, I know – it’s appalling.
- I am an unapologetic book abandoner. If I’m not grabbed within the first 50 pages, then I move on. See #6 and #8 for reasons.
- I am very particular about bookmarks.

Great list! I feel you on #2 and #3 – I totally judge books by their covers and I feel a sort of dread when I see a book that has been ‘mistreated.’ That said, I am working very hard on being open to lending to friends, and not being annoyed when they come back ‘gently used.’
And as for the number of unread books in my house… we’re definitely in the multiples of hundreds. It’s a problem, and the only solution is… there is no solution. *grin*
Thank you! I do get very anxious when I see people throwing books around, but some people I know think it’s better that way – they should look ‘loved’, apparently. Not sure I can do it, myself!
I agree, there doesn’t seem to be a solution, especially as I just keep buying more books…
I’m very particularly about lending too! I don’t even like lending to my sister and she’s just across the hallway! x) My books are just precious and they adore being on my shelves in neat little rows. 😉

I also used to be very particular about my book covers matching and series being a proper set. But I seemed to have developed this collector’s quirk after I had accumulated the totally mismatched books of one particular series, which I really loved. They don’t match because only a handful of titles were available where I lived when I started reading the author. (For some reason, the bookstores stocked only a few of her books, even if they were part of a series.) When I feel myself getting too obsessive about books matching, I look at that old cornerstone of my collection . . . and allow a slight modification of the “rule.” I will be okay with books not matching, as long as it’s not just one book in a set sticking out like a red-headed stepchild. If there are two or more “misfits,” then the set can still look nice, in a motley way. =)
I know just what you mean! My friend only buys second hand books, so her collections are all mis-matched and it works because they’re all different. One not matching is just wrong!
